In the late 1700's, the French people had just down away with their government. After years of the government abusing them, the general public finally banded together to overthrow the monarchy. However, even though the monarchy was gone, the people were no better off because the country existed in a state of anarchy. Along comes Napoleon, a guy who believes that privileges should be grounded on merit instead of lineage. This Napoleonic Code boosted the public's support of him and he was put in power. Now, instead of anarchy, dictatorship took hold of France. Desperate people are willing to believe a dictator's promises. Take, for example, Hitler. Hitler lived in an era when Germany was having some problems. The country had just fought a war and lost. They were in debt, spirits were low, and they were looked down upon by the rest of the world. They were unhappy with the state of the country. Suddenly though, the Nazi regime comes along. It promises Germany a hope that it will rise out of the ashes. This makes the German people feel significant. The party gains support and before you know it, Hitler and his Nazis have seized control of the country and its military. Nobody is allowed to disagree or challenge him without being punished. The country is virtually locked under his grasp.
