After returning on from studying abroad and learning about the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, Pol Pot was driven to create a classless, corruption free society in Cambodia. The leader before Pol Pot Sihanouk had fought for Cambodian independence from France and received it. The economy was poor at the moment especially since Sihanouk refused to aid the U.S during its war with Vietnam in efforts to stay neutral. To assist in bringing income, Sihanouk allowed communists from China and Northern Vietnam to use Cambodian territory as a base. right wing Cambodians supported his socialist economic policies while left wing opposed it. This caused a rural rebellion in Battambang, 1967 but it was met with aggressive regression against left wing. Pol Pot was one of those silenced left wing men. As time passed the civil conflict among left wing ( agrarian side) and right wing ( city workers) deepened as Vietnam’s existence in Cambodia expanded. As Lon Nol attempted to do a coup in Sihanouk he joined Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, they enlisted in a bloody civil war. Pol Pot emerged victorious and took power, his method to help the crippling economy was communism, only the farmers were allowed to remain, many high tech specialists driven out of the country and some middle class converted to farmers. Everything became state property, no individual only community. They all worked in plantations.
