Luckily, I knew I could fix my writing mistakes and make it sound better with more vocabulary words. I felt amazing to have accomplished writing a good essay, but also being able to revise it to show my full potential.

I have always doubted my writing skills because I felt like I did not have the creativity to write a thorough essay to get a decent grade. There was quite a bit of procrastination because I didn’t think I could do my best on the essay. It took awhile, but I knew I had to do it as an assignment and for myself. Whenever I have to write an essay, I do feel like pulling out my teeth or better yet just dropping out of school. I do relate to the essay “Shitty First Drafts” by Anna Lamott because I do struggle writing my first draft. I have always struggled writing any kind of papers. My first drafts are more than shitty. Sometimes in the middle of my first draft you will see a word or even a sentence that has nothing to do with the topic that is being discussed.…

Throughout my educational career standardized testing has been a major part in determining whether or not you can proceed to the next grade or whether you have to take the class again. A Lot of kids that were my age when I had to take the STAAR test usually dreaded having to take a standardized test like the STAAR English II exam. I was no different, I was one of those kids who just wanted to get this test done with and move one. For a while this philosophy of mine worked, however that all would change when I ended up failing the English II STAAR test during my sophomore year of high school. Thus leading to a change in how I would view standardized testing and how my writing composition skills would eventually improve and affect my life.…

I believe that I have the potential to be a good writer, as I wrote a seven-page research paper on the way children are becoming more intelligent with the use of the internet, as they have the ability to look up an answer to a question they do not know anytime of the day. I had an easy time writing the paper because we went over everything that needed to be in it beginning with an attention grabbing thesis and ending with a powerful conclusion. I flew through writing the paper, which made me confident that I was going to get a good grade (and I did), it made me feel that I had improved my writing abilities. I also had to write an analytical paper comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to a modern day problem in society. It was more difficult to write compared to the research paper because I had to compare it to a difficult read.…

Regardless, I do wish that I would have started outside of class earlier, so that I could have spent more time for editing and checking for details. Time management was something I noticed most for the second essay, the visual text analysis. Finding a interesting text was hard, and finding reliable secondary sources was even harder, even with the Columbus State Online Database. Although some researching took place outside of school, most of the actual essay writing took place in school during the work days. Even with the unexpected amount of research that I had, managing time was not a great concern for me.…

Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

My biggest failure was in my AP Language & Composition class during my junior year in high school when I received a C on my report card for the first time. Grades were important in my house not because I have immigrant parents who valued grades over everything else, but because I put so much meaning in getting good grades. When I was little, I made a correlation between higher grades and success later on in life. I carried this belief with me when I started high school and still have pieces of the belief that remained. I enjoyed the idea of grades measuring your intelligence or even your worth as a student; to me it was a constant reminder to others and myself that I am considered “smart”.…

As I have been typing this essay though I have come to realize that I don’t like writing in the slightest other than for practice, it is too time consuming and it bores me. The part of writing that I seem to struggle with is writing itself. This is due to the fact that I don’t have much to say and once I have finished what I actually have to say I have trouble with coming up with more. The only part of writing that I would say that I excel at is the revision process. I have one writing goal, that being to have better grammar, other goals are financial.…

I am not the most advanced writer, and I know I have a lot to work on but it did not occur to me that I was not strong and some might say not even adequate at speaking, reading, and writing until everything was revealed abruptly but instantaneously. I started to notice the differences in my technique when compared to most of my classmates. I was substandard when compared and ashamed of my writing, I doubted my capabilities, and in a way I was right too, because other students were good at writing and I was inferior to them. Even though I had good grades on the classes I took it took me much longer to accomplish a good essay then others.…
