I steered my 2002 Honda Civic into the small parking area behind a multi-family house perched at the top of Calvary Hill where I rented the second floor apartment. The neighborhood was run down and definitely on the wrong side of the tracks, some might even call it a slum, but the rent was cheap, and I had an awesome view of the town and rolling hills to the east of town from a small second floor balcony outside my bedroom. By living in the rougher end of town, I was able to make ends meet, and keep up with my tuition payments without having to take out any student loans. I retrieved my laptop bag from the backseat of my car and carried it up a narrow staircase to my apartment. I unlocked the door, and walked into the apartment. Even with the windows open and fans running all day, the apartment was stiflingly hot and muggy. I walked through my bedroom and stepped outside onto the balcony. The summer solstice still less than a week away; the sun hovered high in the sky, dipping slowly into the horizon. A soft breeze had picked up and it promised to be a cool evening. I sat on a wicker patio loveseat that was just small enough to fit on the balcony, unzipped my bag and removed my laptop. I should have started reading the final exams, I had many hours’ worth of grading ahead of me, and the administration expected me to enter final grades before the end of the next day.
