You Can’t Know Where You’re Going Until You Know Where You Have Been Those words ruminated in my head for months. Where did I come from? What was my story? What am I going to do with my life?! In my childhood, and well into early adulthood, I often thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up. For many years, I wanted to be a veterinarian and help animals heal. At other times I wanted to be a teacher and work with children. During high school, I wanted to be a school counselor and help “troubled” students like myself. There always seemed to be so many options, and making the choice was daunting. I have evaluated my life at different stages, adopting values and gaining insight along the way through personal and professional relationships. Collectively, these have guided me on my path and provided me with the foundation for being a healer. Turning Point. In 2010, I was in Palo Alto having sangria with a good friend. I was upset that evening and found comfort in drinking. As the night came to an end, my mood hadn’t improved. It was worse - I was angry and annoyed, and drunk. As I headed back to my car, a female officer stopped and asked if I needed a ride. I told her “no” and she drove off. That was the last thing I remember from that night. The next morning, I was having a hard time seeing. My vision was blurry. I could see blue and red flashing lights. I thought “What did I do? What’s happening?”. I still couldn’t anything but those lights. I heard muffled voices.…
