Baneful Bigotry
“Whoever looks at America will see: the ship is powered by stupidity, corruption, or prejudice.”
-Johann Most
Prejudice is one of the major elements of today’s American society. For decades there have been cases where the general public fuels the mass prejudice against people of color or different religions. Muslims in particular suffer this prejudice greatly. Most Muslims today are labeled as terrorists, because of only some Muslims who commit crimes, and don’t truly follow Islam. The media loves portraying Muslims as a violent, savage people. Following the Twin Towers attack on September 11, and the recent bombing in Paris, prejudice against Muslims has never been

According to an article by Fusion, a Muslim attorney stated that Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim message “[makes [Muslims] feel less American.” This means that Muslims only feel safety at home because of public harassment and slander. Many Americans feel as if Muslim roles in American society are “inadequate” and therefore should be slandered. Anti-Muslim sentiment have been the cause of several extremist incidents, in which a woman was illegally evicted for being Muslim. Jalal, the evictee, claims that her landlord “[l]eft daily handwritten notes with threats and ethnic slurs on her door, such as ‘Get the fuck out of my house’ and ‘You’re a fucking nasty Arabic pig.’” This means that other individuals consumed by prejudice would also commit acts of privacy invasion and other disrespectful acts against those whom they are prejudiced …show more content…
A study by CAIR concluded “that 20 percent of Muslim students say they have experienced discrimination by a school staff member, the very people charged with protecting them from this type of hate.” This means that teachers, the ones that are supposed to protect victims of bullying, are often the bullies themselves when it comes to racial discrimination. There leaves very little option for remaining help when the educator is against you. Laurie Goodstein found that “‘Muslims and leaders of mosques across the United States say they are experiencing a wave of death threats, assaults and vandalism unlike anything they have experienced since the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.’” As war looms on the horizon, many nationalists feel as though the conflict was caused by Muslim Americans, who have very little to almost nothing to do with the United States’ conflict against ISIS. Prejudice goes beyond verbal slander when it comes to

Growing up and being an American Muslim after the tragic event of 9/11 was very tough for many. They faced all kinds of prejudice, making them fearful for their lives in their own home. One American Muslim, named Shawna Ayoub Ainslie, wrote an article in the Huffington Post about how her roots had cost her her life. She no longer felt safe in her community and started to doubt her relationship with her home country, Islam. Some ways 9/11 had changed Shawna’s life was how she became afraid to go outside, stopped looking up when walking down the street, changed the way she dressed, stopped going to religion events, and even had to watch her kids very closely while they played outside.…

The book Blindspot and the concept of hidden biases and stereotypes affect my hometown community, my new college community and also the country and the world around me. As I began reading through the pages, I was surprised how relevant this information was to my daily life. Now that I reflect, I can’t think of a situation where judgments or misconceptions relating to the book haven’t popped into my mind. Stereotypes and unconscious biases are around everyone constantly. I was raised in a fairly non-diverse small town.…

Ever since the attacks on 9/11, hate crimes have jumped by 21% (Villemez). Many angry Americans punished Muslims because of their religion, however, the Muslim religion does not teach any actions that relate to violence and injustice. The mistreatment of Muslims is only because Al-Qaeda claims to be Muslim. However, they are an Islamic based terrorist group, disobeying many rules and regulations of Islam. For example, Vanita Gupta, leader of the Justice Department’s Civil rights division, said, ““We saw it after 9/11, and we continue to see an uptick in allegations of hate-related incidents today following the tragic events over the past year,”(Villemez).…

Unfortunately, American Muslims suffer from racial profiling due to the compared racial group responsible for the attack. Villemez states, “According to the FBI, 28 hate crimes committee in 2000 were found to be anti-Islamic. In 2001, that number jumped to 481, and it remained above 100 in subsequent years” (1). The Views and Handling of Hate Crimes In the eyes of the United States court system, hate crimes are simply an enhancer. What that means is when someone is convicted of a particular crime, they receive a just sentence. However, if there is solid evidence to prove that he or she was motivated by hate, bias, or prejudice, their punishment would be modified appropriately (hence the word enhancer). While this may seem like a relatively successful process, it is sadly, more often than not, ineffective.…

I attended the Beyond Burkas and Bombers discussion. We watched the Beyond Burkas and Bombers documentary which showed Muslim Americans talk about how their lives changed when 911 occurred. Life was never the same afterwards and many Americans grew an irrational hatred of an entire faith. Everything evil and bad was associated with anything Muslim or possibly related to being Muslim. Often Muslim Americans must answer the questions for a few individuals that committed these terrorist acts.…

After 9/11, prejudice and discrimination regarding the Islamic faith specifically rose. Muslim-Americans started uprooting their lives and fleeing their own homes out of fear of retaliation. The wound becomes fresher and fresher with every terrorist attack because the generalization that all people of the Islamic faith are terrorists becomes reinforced with no valid evidence. Nowadays, those who resemble a Middle Eastern heritage are under attack and considered below the majority. This is a direct threat to their quest for the American…

Ever since the 9/11 attacks on the world trade centers in New York, there has been prejudice and hate towards those from the Middle East. “A decade after Sept. 11, 2001, the survey, conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, shows that a majority of Muslims say the terrorist attacks made it more difficult to be a Muslim in the United States. Many said that they had been singled out by airport security officers and that people had acted suspicious of them or called them offensive names” (Washington Post). It’s clear that some American’s still label Middle Easterners as terrorists and refer to them as “them” because they are still in…

Is it ever acceptable to sacrifice the civil rights of many in order to avoid the perilous activity of a few? The stereotypes that place people into categories cause others to develop the idea that it is necessary to group those that share similarities. In classifying the populace into divisions, we describe a group with certain characteristics because of the mistakes an individual has made. There are billions of others in that same category who are worthy of respect and deserve to have privileges. The actions of one can take the religious rights of all.…
