Sikhs are one of the brown, dark skinned people who have been the targets of anti-Muslim hate crimes. They have been misunderstood because of their beard and turban. In a 2013 survey made by Stanford University and by the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, it was found that 49 percent of Americans think that the religion of Sikhism is a section of Islam. Sikhism and Islam are two separate religions. In this survey it was also concluded that some Americans tend to mix Sikhs and turbans with al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, The Islamic state or with the Taliban. Also, 20 percent of the survey takers are more likely to get angry when they see someone wearing a turban. (History of Hate: Crimes Against Sikhs Since 9/11, 2012) (Guerra,2016) …show more content…

With this background, it is essential to look at how these hate crimes are being provoked.
A politician named Donald Trump proposed a ban on Muslim immigrants and had asked for surveillance in mosques to prevent acts of terrorism. (Stephenson, Becker, 2016) A crime analyst named James Nolan has said hate crimes against American Muslims has showed “a real spike” because of candidates such as Donald Trump. There has also been a tape that has showed a woman who threw liquid on a Muslim woman and after bashing the religion of Islam, she also said she was going to vote for Donald Trump. She then said “so he could send you all back where you came from.” This clearly shows the influence Donald Trump has towards his supporters. (Lichtblau, 2016, p.3)

The increase in Islamophobic violence has resulted in attacks not only against Muslims, but against individuals mistaken as Muslims, such as Sikhs. Since 9/11, Sikhs have been indiscriminately targeted as terrorists because of the similarities between the appearance of male Sikhs and the stereotypical portrayal of Muslims, wearing a turban and a beard. Even though Sikhs do not practice Islam, the extent of harassment had been so great after 9/11 that a volunteer coalition had been founded for Sikhs who had been mistaken for Muslims and attacked (Nasser). Political issues have also risen that could be attributed to the fear-mongering inspired by the media. In January 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that banned immigration from 7 Muslim majority countries.…
