As mentioned earlier, the U.S., as well as Iran, signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which outlines that the proliferation of nuclear weapons threatens international security, increasing the likelihood for devastating nuclear war, and stipulates that the signers commit to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons to new states, disarmament by states that already had nuclear weapons, and outlines the right of states to pursue the development of peaceful nuclear energy. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a part of the UN as serves as the international organization to coordinate safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies among member states. Despite repeated statements from the Iran government that it is only involved in nuclear activity for peaceful energy, the IAEA has found Iran violating several of its NPT commitments to refrain from developing nuclear weapons, and has documentation of Iran’s illicit uranium imports, uranium conversion, uranium enrichment, hidden nuclear sites, laser isotope enrichment, and plutonium experiments.
As a result, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted six resolutions in attempts to address Iran’s nuclear program, demanding that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment program, in addition to adherence to the confidence-building measures specified in the 2006 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors resolution.
