On the campaign trail President Donald Trump espoused an America first policy, indicating that the United States should stay out of wars that we have no place in. This sentiment was held by many Americans during the 2016 election as they saw the United States becoming the international police. However, since taking office the president has been forced to take military action, such as the bombing of the Syrian airbase in April. While some have seen this as a detraction from his America first policy that is not the case. The United States must maintain its stance against terrorism in the Middle East to protect our own national security and since former President Obama spent so much time avoiding a war in Syria he forgot the supposed red line that he had drawn. President Trump not only protected our national security with this attack but he also upheld the U.N. doctrine of the “responsibility to protect” or R2P which was approved by the U.N. back in 2005 (Tafuri). This doctrine “provides that states must take action to protect their citizens and prevent crimes against humanity” and if they fail to do so the international community has a responsibility to step in (Tafuri). The seat was left open with the death of Antonin Scalia during the final year of former President Obama’s second term in office. The senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, and the senate republicans prevented a vote on former President Obama’s nomination. The action paid off with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency, allowing the Republicans to hold the conservative seat on the Supreme Court. Democrats argue that this seat was “stolen” because former President Obama should have filled the seat and that the confirmation of Gorsuch is not an accomplishment since the Republicans had to use the “nuclear option” to get the nomination through. This does not change the fact that President Trump fulfilled not only his promise to the American people to nominate a conservative to the Supreme Court but also his constitutional duty to do
