All of these factors can result in decreased access to scarce resources and ultimately lower life chances. As minorities are able to obtain jobs that allow them to have upward mobility, poverty becomes confined to more concentrated areas. If a family does happen to achieve upward mobility, they tend to move out of poverty stricken areas to the suburbs where there are more opportunities, taking their routine, mentorship, and success with them. A person’s eventual status is not limited to the influence of structural factors. A person will ultimately decide, more or less, what path they choose to take. If this was not the case, we would see no upward mobility within minority groups.
