Even after laws have been put in place to prevent bias against women and minorities, there is still discrimination throughout the United States. It is a common misconception that a person is solely responsible for where they eventually end up on the socioeconomic ladder, but there are also many structural factors that contribute to somebody's placement relative to others in this country. Structural factors such as housing, employment, and education can all play a role in the ultimate placement of a person, but individual factors such as personal decisions can also play a role.
Due to the lingering discrimination towards minorities, employment can be hard to find for many in those subgroups. It has become evident that some companies are more likely to hire a white male with a criminal record than a crime-free black or Hispanic man with the same qualifications. All of these factors can result in decreased access to scarce resources and ultimately lower life chances. As minorities are able to obtain jobs that allow them to have upward mobility, poverty becomes confined to more concentrated areas. If a family does happen to achieve upward mobility, they tend to move out of poverty stricken areas to the suburbs where there are more opportunities, taking their routine, mentorship, and success with them. A person’s eventual status is not limited to the influence of structural factors. A person will ultimately decide, more or less, what path they choose to take. If this was not the case, we would see no upward mobility within minority groups. Although many minorities may not have positive role models, they still have the ability to decide the type of life they want to live whether it be, for example, selling drugs or furthering their education in hopes of a
