We have become anxious and afraid and we feel like life is slipping away and that life has no meaning and it is out of control. When we live like this, we miss out on the important things that life has to offer. Some of those things that we miss is the fun in the world and knowing how to live free of stress and anxiety. We also miss the today, the moment. We can't seem to enjoy life because we have so much other things going on that we lose sight of that. This is a concern because we forget how to live. There is not a whole lot of conscious made to pause, breathe. In other words, we do nothing and just be the way we are for the majority of the time. However, we must realize that being present in the moment does not mean that we don't have goals we would like to achieve. It just means that we are consciously and persistently aware of the here and now, as we move forward to achieving our goals. So how does being mindful help? If greater well-being isn't enough of an incentive, the benefits of mindfulness techniques helps improve physical health in a number of ways. Mindfulness can help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, and improve sleep. It also improves mental health, such as depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, couples' conflicts, and anxiety disorders. So mindfulness works, in part, by helping people to accept their experiences, including painful emotions, rather than react to them with dislike and avoidance. Being mindful helps in many ways. For example, we eat breakfast but, we are already thinking about what's on the agenda for today. We may be at a school play with our children but, we are on the phone continuously texting a colleague. We may have a discussion with a close friend or relative or neighbor but, we are not paying attention or listening to them. This all means that we are living like speed machines. We are so busy with what is going on in our everyday lives, that we are forgetting to take time for ourselves and that we too have a life to live where it should not be stressful.
