Methodology and Methods
The basis of my research is to determine in what ways students retain knowledge in a face-to-face and eLearning environment. I will first examine how students are motivated and engaged, and then research what strategies and methods are used to measure knowledge retention.
There are two major approaches to research: qualitative and quantitative research. Yilmaz (2013) explains the difference between qualitative and quantitative research “in terms of their epistemological, theoretical and methodological underpinnings” (p.312). Qualitative research as defined by Saldaña (2011) “is an umbrella term for a wide variety of approaches to methods for the study of natural social life” (p.4). Cooper (2012) proposes that for qualitative research to occur, the researcher must “collect, analyze and interpret the data” in order to conclude their findings (p.1). Quantitative research is defined as empirical research into a social phenomenon so a theory can be tested using variables that are quantified and analyzed to establish if the theory explains a phenomenon (Creswell, 2009; Gay, Mills & Airasian, 2011).The purpose of quantitative research is to examine how variables relate; it is about quantifying observations and knowing the observations are measurable with hard evidence (Balnaves & Caputi, 2001, n.p.).
