In the light of C.S. Lewis’ essay “Meditation in a Toolshed”, the difference between Theology and Religious Studies is that theology looks along the beam, whereas, religious studies look at the beam. Theology focuses on the subjectivity of each individuals’ experiences as an act of hope – faith. Religious studies examines and analyzes information as it is by being objective.
Basically, personal experiences versus scientific facts. An example from the essay is about a young man meeting a woman; when looking along the beam, all the experiences he is experiencing is understood as falling in love, whereas looking at the beam is understood as biological stimulation – scientific explanations.
