A syringe consisted of a glass or plastic barrel into which a plunger was inserted (Hayes, R., 1995, Harvard Business School).
Thousands of combinations were possible between a needle, a cannula, and a syringe with varying thickness and lengths. Syringes were described in terms of their size, usually specified by a thousandth of a liter (ml) or cubic centimeter (cc). The traditional syringe included three parts; a plastic injected molded barrier, a plastic molded plunger, and a rubber gasket or a stopper. In 1970, a 2-piece was introduced that combined the stopper into plunger, which resulted in cheaper production. Even through the 2-piece did not have the same dosage or a variety of possibilities that the 3-piece had, it quickly became popular in many countries and MPC subsequently experienced a huge growth in market share.
Originally, MPC factories have been organized by a process stage; at one end of the factories were the plastic modeling department where barrels and plungers were produced, then transported by carts to an assembly area and assembled into finished products. After labeling the finished products were sterilized and packed for shipping. Overtime, the production process evolved in two interrelated ways; first to perform many of the initial steps and second the use of in-line processes, where plastic molding machines created specific parts, then transported to assembly and marking area, and finally
