Meals On Wheels Interview Report

Improved Essays
Early this year, my grandmother became very ill and required around the clock attention. My family and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of physically, but we also wanted to make sure her meals were healthy and nutritious. Through word of mouth, I heard about the Meals on Wheels program that just happened to be in my county. I contacted the site manager and the next day, the agency started to deliver meals to my grandmother’s home. We were so grateful because we could concentrate on other things besides cooking. When I received the report assignment, I knew I wanted to know more about what the agency does and what they stand for. Maybe this report will provide individuals with information to pass along to others in need.
I was given the honor to interview Ms. Denise Goodman, Site Manager of the Twiggs County Meals on Wheels and Home Delivery Meal Route. Ms. Goodman has been an advocate for senior citizens for thirteen years and has devoted eight years in public service. She’s been employed at other non-profit agencies like Star Choices and the University of Georgia’s Extension County Offices. Even though Ms. Goodman doesn’t hold any college education or credentials, she feels strongly about human service and all it stands for. “It’s a huge enjoyment and fulfilment to be able to help and see others thrive, especially our seniors, they depend of

Laura R. Shantz and Sylvie Frigon noted in their study that most non-profit groups- including the Elizabeth Fry Society-have limited means by which to make their facilities accessible. The authors discuss how older women may face mobility limitations and that for some women with physical disabilities, challenges such as winter weather may cause isolation and limit their access to resources. Mary, one of the women Shantz and Frigon interviewed, said about non-profits like E Fry that “you’ve got mobility issues to take into consideration… Elderly women might not be able to get out into the community in the middle of winter to go to a drop-in center or to get out and participate in an event” (Shantz). Therefore, while E Fry offers many programs and services to women, many of said programs are simply just not created with women who have physical limitations in mind and this restricts the amount of people utilizing their services.…

Sometimes it’s difficult to know if and how my presentations and offers of information and handouts are being received by the clients I see at the food banks I visit. Last week at Federal Way Food Bank, I was fortunate to interact with a regular client who gave me a little insight. K welcomed me warmly, and told me she hadn’t been able to come to the food bank but once a month since her car broke down in November. She continued to share how she was able to be very frugal and prepare tasty dishes for herself and her son with food she had stored and items shopped for at her infrequent trips to the supermarket. She went on to praise me and the great recipes she received during my demonstrations.…

The act of volunteering allows us to not only provide a service to the community, but also to reflect on our everyday lives. Whilst volunteering at ‘Meals on Wheels’, an Australian non-profit organisation that provides meals for people requiring support, I delivered meals to recipients’ homes. Since ‘Meals on Wheels’ revolves around providing meals, it has led me to reflect on the everyday aspect of mealtime. Prior to learning about sociological theories, I took food for granted without thinking about society’s influence on the routines we perform at mealtime. As such, I will argue that the sociological theory of structural functionalism transforms my understanding of mealtime by first describing mealtime in relation to me, before applying…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Social interaction is a vital part of human life and much too often people forget this still applies in the later stages. This program offers them somewhere they can go to have fun with others. Additionally, by adhering to the psychological needs of seniors, it would also be fair to say it increases the life expectancy and promotes the human dignity of senior citizens.
