Over the last three years, Nancy had taught Charity how to put together a good meal, oftentimes having very little to work with as far as ingredients go. They gathered herbs from the herb garden, picked vegetables and dug potatoes from the spring and fall gardens, and even ventured out into the forest to gather different things at different times of the year that did not grow in their gardens; nuts, berries, bay leaves, wild sage, greens, and even medicinal herbs that they either preserved or dried, according to what it was. And, Nancy taught her how to care for her family, other than feeding them and making sure they had clean clothes and beds to sleep…
When I was discussing the details of the internship with Dr. Hill, she expressed her concern about the food bank when she retired. Based upon her understanding surrounding the politics of the school, the food bank will close due. She explains that the ‘powers that be’ do not want that type of assistance associated with the community college. As it was discussed in class, higher education is suppose to lead to financial freedom. With this in mind, it is easy to see why an institution of higher education would not want a food bank on its campus.…

Early this year, my grandmother became very ill and required around the clock attention. My family and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of physically, but we also wanted to make sure her meals were healthy and nutritious. Through word of mouth, I heard about the Meals on Wheels program that just happened to be in my county. I contacted the site manager and the next day, the agency started to deliver meals to my grandmother’s home. We were so grateful because we could concentrate on other things besides cooking.…
People who do not have food insecurities and are not from low income household cannot relate to people who do; however, one can donate, volunteer and advocate to help those in need Social change occurs when the communities as a whole come together to make a change. When one can get into the mindset of not just worrying about themselves and just their families but their neighbors and friends and how poverty and the systematic oppression affect them all. For example when volunteering at them Atlanta Community Food Bank it was about bringing stranger and/or friends and families together to work towards a common goal which is to improve the community. Food stamps are a great way to help for people that are dealing with food insecurity. But how long do people actually stay on food stamps? People who use food stamps or SNAP can be on the program anywhere from one month to three years. Depending on the person or families it varies on how long people usually stay on food stamps. I think there need to be a way that these families can learn to get off food stamps and no to rely on food stamps.…
A topic that has been roaming around Texas has been the usage of food stamps, and the careless act of people. Millions of dollars have been wasted on people that do not even need the government’s help, and the others that honestly need it, go on working hard, to earn money for food. The government believes they are shortening hunger when clearly, they are making it worst. Food Stamps is the second most expensive welfare there is. To receive food stamps, you must have received a low income and have had children that out of nowhere keep on multiplying.…
Statistics flashed across a screen, solemn music accompanied a slideshow of scenes showing desolate landscapes and impoverished communities. On screen, a mother held her starving child and a group of girls in mismatched clothes gathered water from a muddy well. We watched a presentation given to us before the service event and listened to the instructor as he described the conditions in other countries. He showed us photos of the people we would be helping during the mission, communities that were in desperate need of donations, supplies, and most importantly, food. The Lifeline food packing mission was my first service experience, which was the case for most of the students who participated, and it as also one of the first glimpses we had of just how bad the situations are in countries where starvation and malnutrition are so common.…
Our morning at feed my starving children was pretty overwhelming at first. There was a large group of volunteers. I have volunteered at feed my starving children several times, but this was the largest group I have ever been in. At the beginning of the session they explain the packing process and the different types of meals that they send. We had the unique opportunity to pack the Potato-W which is made for…
With our national debt rising every year, there are many things that are contributing to it. Programs like food stamp benefits are meant for low income people struggling to provide food for their family. However, there are many that will take advantage of this program throughout history. In the last eighty years, food programs have been modified and reformed, and none of them seem to work without increasing the debt ratio. It is imperative better ways of organization of the program are formed.…
During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
