LaVaughn helped Jolly get into the ´Moms up´ program so she could finish high school to make it easier for her to get and keep a job: ¨Going to school is how you get a better kind of job, this Barbara says. Jeremy and Jilly get Day Care like you saw, there´s an appointment for Tuesday” (Wolff 109). Even though LaVaughn isn’t getting paid, she is still going to go and help Jolly by babysitting for free while she goes to find a job to support her family, and eventually pay her again: “I’m going back to Jolly’s after school while she hunts a job. She can’t pay me but she will when she gets one” (Wolff 73). LaVaughn is so committed to Jilly that she was willing to put her saving for college on hold until Jilly could pay her again. In the beginning of the book, when LaVaughn was babysitting Jeremy and Jilly she was there so long that she didn’t have enough time to study long enough to get good grades or do homework, so her grades were suffering. This shows how much she is committed to helping out Jolly and her family, and she was willing to have her grades suffer a little bit to help.
