The government clearly had a role on how different parts of Asia were shaped into the modern states that they are today. One part of Asia that was changed by the government was India. One example of this is the custom of arranged marriages. This custom currently being challenged in India through call centers. In these call centers the majority of the workers are women however it is a mixed gender working environment. In the United States this would be completely normal. However, in Asia there is a custom of arranged marriages and many believe that socializing between the sexes may lead to the end of arranged marriages in modern India. Another influence that family has on Indian society is shown in the book Punjabi Century. In this book the narrator talks about his father and says that, “My grand-uncle had been educated under similar circumstances by my grandfather; it was now his turn to educate my father. This debt my father repaid, when his turn came, by educating his three younger brothers” (Tandon 25). In this instance, it is shown how families help each other during desperate times and that family ties can make or break a family given that without helping each other nobody would’ve gotten the education that they were looking
