In Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver she introduced this idea by showing that the community had to reform the family structure to hold the society together. This was an important part of the novel because the idea of birth mothers not raising their own children was made possible by not giving babies in the community last names. Having no last names also contributed to the sameness in the society. Those are only a few reasons why they took last names out of the family structure of the community.
The second important thing is the lack of emotional urges from taking the injections sterilizing sexual differences. The injections that the community had took away emotions including love. The lack of emotions made it to where the community did not have to talk about sexual differences. This took away from family structure because the community did not have to teach their kids about their bodies.
Furthermore, the families in the community are basically fake due to the lack of emotions. The lack of emotions makes it to where families do not have different opinions. Without different opinions there are no problems for a family to sit down and work out together which is a major thing families are for.
