In this family there is a boy that she learns is named Ollie. He is a year or two younger than Madeline. Madeline thinks he is very good looking and has a crush on him. Other things that Madeline has learned about the family next door via looking through her bedroom window is that the dad is an alcoholic and abusive to the mother. Olly’s sister is a rebel she smokes, but her parents know about it, but still don’t do much about it. Olly and Madeline have started talking to each other online with instant messaging. Olly talks about school and his family. He starts to get suspicious about why he never sees Madeline out of the house. It takes a lot of courage for Madeline to tell him this, but she tells him that she is sick, but doesn’t give much specifics. Madeline and Olly have been messaging each other for awhile now, so Madeline wants him to somehow come in her house. Madeline knows she will never be able to convince her mom to do this, but she could ask Nurse Carla. Carla agreed to let him in the house after he got decontaminated. At the house the Olly and Madeline have to sit at opposite ends of a room, so Madeline doesn’t have a chance of getting sick. Francis, he thought she didn’t have SCID and that she wasn’t actually sick. Madeline didn't believe this, so she asked her mom if she was actually sick and her mom said that of course she was. Madeline decided to ask Carla too and she thought it could be a possibility, so they took her blood work and sent it to another doctor named Dr. Chase who didn’t think she had SCID either. That night after she found out Madeline went into her mom’s room where r her file are and couldn't find anything regarding her diagnosis of SCID. Madeline confronted her mom and she finally gave in to say there was actually no evidence that she had SCID. Madeline was beside herself and was so angry at her mom. Carla said she thought that her mom was still mentally sick because of the loss of her dad and brother, but Madeline couldn’t forgive her. A few months later Madeline decided to fly to NYC where Ollie was now living. Madeline told him to meet her in a bookstore and they united again at last. This book is a classic because they made a movie out of it. This book would have been different if Olly told it because he would be dumbfounded about why he loved this girl that wasn’t let outside of her house. I chose to read this book because I saw it in a bookstore and remembered they made a movie out of it, so I thought I should read
