The first crucial ingredient in a fantasy novel is originality. In order to keep the readers interested there must be something to separate the book from all others. This means that there needs to be flare, surprise, and suspense. In Magyk there are various instances of adventure like when the main characters Jenna, boy 412, Nicko Heap, and Marcia must jump down a garbage chute, flee from a group of hunters, sail a small boat into deadly marshes, and eventually recapture a newly captured Marcia. All of this must be done discreetly to avoid capture and protect Jenna from being assassinated. In the book they must leave their homes and work together although they don’t know each other well and work out problems and decide if they have an ulterior motive for being with each other. For example boy 412 must decide if he will help his former master the hunter and sacrifice Jenna and the others as well as his question of if he should learn darke magyk to become the antagonist DomDaniel’s apprentice or if he should keep pure magyk and become Marcia’s apprentice. Marcia is faced with staying at their hiding place in the marshes or if she should return to the castle, their home, to help Nicko, Jenna, and boy 412’s father. This can be different abilities or creatures and determines the issues and trials that the characters must face and overcome to reach their goal. Magyk has several interesting creatures as before mentioned and also possesses many types of magyk. The main two are regular magyk and the sometimes more powerful darke magyk. These magyks determine value in this world and how a person is seen, however one must be born with them. The better one’s regular magyk ability the better one’s prospects were and the more impressive one’s darke magyk abilities the more everyone feared and shunned the darke magyk user. Magyk ability can often be determined by birth as the seventh son of a family is more likely to have more magical talent. As one of the characters, boy 412, is the seventh son of a seventh son he is very powerful and shapes the novel. These elements of whimsy give the reader some room for imagination and help the reader to see the world the author is describing clearly. These factors give a resolved sense of whimsy and
