First Reading: “Don’t You Think It’s Time to Start Thinking?” By Northrop Frye Frye (year?) is talking about critical thinking as a means in which to discern the difference between reading and writing for basic knowledge, and the more effective use of articulated methods of reading and writing as way of expressing more complex thought processes: “Most students need to be taught, very carefully and patiently, that there is no such thing as an inarticulate idea waiting to have the right words wrapped around it” (Frye para.4). This form of “articulation” presents the need for reading and writing as a foundation for critical thinking and an objective way to communicate with others. Therefore, reading and writing are tools for critical thinking about the society in which people communicate with each other on a daily basis.…

Released in 1957, “The cat in the hat” is no ordinary children’s book. Theodor Geisel, who wrote under the pen name “Dr. Seuss”, was restricted to the use of only 250 words, and the puzzle of how to turn this miniature vocabulary into an entertaining, rhyming story book took nine months to solve. The job fell to a brilliant man with the playful and sometimes naughty mind of a child, and the result changed the way children all over the world learned to read. The challenge for the book’s production came from an article in “Life” magazine in the mid-1950s. The feature exposed the poor literacy rate among American children.…

“Lonely Hearts” which was written by Wendy Cope in 1986 appears to be her longing for company. From what we can observe Cope utilizes two forms while composing this poem. These forms include a rhetorical approach and is metrical. The type of language Cope uses for this poem seems to be formal, although it is complex in the way the stanza interrelates. The difficulty of villanelles poems is relevant due to the title “Lonely Hearts”, as if Cope reflects her longing to be a difficult task.…

The proliferation of print enabled English society to gain more readers, but this reading public was caused by the sudden rise in the literacy rate amongst the lower class. As authors such as William Cobbett demand a certain method to be placed upon the act of reading and the type of literature to be read for the people, it suggests their disregard for the potential reading prowess in the emerging lower class readers as well as their attempt to subdue the power the population holds over writers in this post-print era. Elitist authors and critics who firmly believed there were no literature worthy of enlightening the lower class dissuades the potential of a better educated society through a subtle reinforcement of the class system by instructing…
