In all three of my short stories people have a hard time accepting others and their differences. My first short story I will be talking about is Ender’s Game By Orson Scott. In this story people don’t accept Ender because he was born third in his family making him a third. He also has a chip in his neck that was put in there when he was born because having a third child where they’re from isn’t normal and is shunned upon by the people. “Perhaps it's impossible to wear an identity without becoming what you pretend to be.”…

One main idea that can be seen in the four books we read and the movie that we watched, everyone is treated specific ways because of how they are different from the others around them. The way that people interact with others is based mostly on how different they are from them. Reading about how things use to be and being able to see how little has changed over time just confirms that we need to work together to change things for the better. Everyone knows how people will treat others different because of how they are different but it’s harder to read about, there is more detail and it makes it so much more real than when you heard about it quickly from someone else. Treating someone different just because of how they look, because of the family they come from, their religion, or even where they live is just wrong; words and actions hurt people more than they will often let off.…

Does society play a role into feeling unaccepted in today’s culture? Many would say that our country as a whole has gotten better at accepting those who are different than the “normal”, but if this were the case then why do people feel pressured to pass? In the book, Passing When People Can’t Be Who They Are, Brooke Kroeger explained passing as, “Passing involves erasing details or certain aspects of a given life in order to move past perceived, suspected, or actual barriers to achieve desired ends.” (8) As you can see passing means to act as something you believe yourself not to be, like putting on a front. Reasons as to why someone of color would want to pass as a different race, could be issues like; society, white privilege, and safety.…

Nonconformists Are Extinct! “Nonconformists” believe that they do not conform to society in any way or form. This conclusion is false because it is not possible to not conform to society. Society controls individual's thought processes and makes them believe that if they are not following the “norm,” that they are then considered outcasts from society. Nonconformists separate themselves from conformists and society to express their own beliefs based on their own morals and opinions; however, they do conform to something one way or another.…

The way others view us all too often affects the way we see ourselves. Though those around us cannot see what is going on inside us, or who we are within, we have a certain degree of credence that is placed in these people. This is something I experience all too often as an Asian American. My peers perceive me as smart simply because of my race. I felt pressured to be smart, to always have the right answers.…

Stuart Hall (1997) wrote about the impact of classifying and stereotyping various forms of difference in society. According to Hall (1997), race, like many other forms of difference, is socially constructed (p. 225). As such, individuals’ racial identity varies over place and time (p. 239). Hall (1997) suggests that stereotypes are used to maintain the boundaries between different groups of people because racial boundaries have proven to be fallible (p. 258). In his text, The Spectacle of the ‘Other’, Hall (1997) offers three different cultural strategies that can be used to combat stereotyping (p. 270).…

One inherent quality in humans is the need to categorize things. We need order and in order to achieve order, we put things in categories. It is not even always conscious, but it is and has always been present both socially and institutionally in our society. As a society, we classify people in a process called stratification by race, class, and gender. By understanding human’s innate need to classify people through symbolic interactionism, we can develop a deeper understanding of the manifestations of social stratification in society and use that in order to make it known that this need to classify does not need to elevate some people and disparage others.…
