Love. Is love real? Yes you love your family. Yes you love your friends, but can someone actually fall in love? It is undeniable that love plays an enormous and unavoidable role in our lives. We find it discussed in song, film, novels, and plays—humorously or seriously; it is a constant theme of life as we grow and also a vibrant theme for the teens. Philosophically, the nature of love, since the time of the Ancient Greeks, has effected all of us throughout our lives producing theories that range from the materialistic conception of love as purely a physical phenomenon—“an animalistic or genetic urge that dictates our behavior”—to theories of love as an intensely spiritual version that at its deepest times, permits us to do crazy things. The play Othello by William Shakespeare seems to circle back around to the topic of love. Love was the sole purpose of most of the conflict throughout this book. It starts out as a positive thing-Othello and Desdemona getting married- but then only creates conflict throughout the rest of the play. Shakespeare’s goal of this play was to show how love caused the chaos, not just one evil person like Iago. It is in our human nature to want to love and to be loved that we do crazy things for it. I believe what Shakespeare is trying to show us is that you can’t let love blind you into ruining yours and other people’s lives.
