In the United States, most older adults who choose to live in their homes versus a long-term care facility are afforded this opportunity due to their family or friends who provide unpaid care for their services, according to the National Institute on Aging [NIA], (2016). The authors also found that 95 percent of older adults who are not in long-term care facilities receive caregiver assistance from their families and that approximately half are ages 65 and older (NIA, 2016).
