The Life and Works of Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry is one of the most well-known modern authors. Her writing style is very imaginative, but also shows the importance of our interdependence with each other. This way of writing has inspired many readers throughout the years, and continues to today. Because of her interesting life it is no wonder that her works are too.
Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was the middle child of three. Her parents were Robert and Katherine Hammersberg. Her older sister, Helen, died at a young age. Lowry remembers her sister as “gentle, family-oriented and eager to please” (Lowry). She had a younger brother Jon, who was much like their father. Her dad was an army dentist, so she lived in many places. She was born in Hawaii, but started school in New York. When World War II started, her father went overseas. Her siblings and her mother then moved to Pennsylvania. There she finished grade school. Her family moved to Tokyo, Japan, and that is where she completed seventh and eighth grade. This story was set in a “utopia” sometime in the future. Jonas, the main character was the only person who had memories from the past. Even though he knew that there would be pain with choice, he knew there would never be true joy without it. This is why Jonas chooses to risk his life giving the memories of the past back to people. Lois Lowry received a Newbery Honor Medal for this novel too. The Giver is arguably one of the most thought provoking books, not only of that she’s written, but also in young adult fiction. It definitely makes you question if equality or “sameness” is overrated. Even if there was no bad in the world would it even be worth it if there was no good
