Mary began to explore spiritualism shortly after the loss of her son Willie, as she believed that she was able to see and communicate with the dead. Phycologists believe that Mary Todd used the perception that she could see her deceased loved ones in order to cope with the devastating loss – she was so overcome with grief that her mind made up things to try to cope.
