Lois Ann Hammersberg was born on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a shy and introverted girl who loved to read. She decided to be a writer at 8 or 9. Writing was her favorite subject in school. Her father was a dentist and an Army officer. Since, her father was an army officer and she moved around she was a shy, quiet girl who spent a lot of time alone. Number the stars is about two girls, AnnMarie and her friend Ellen, who live in Copenhagen, Denmark. The story takes place during world war II when the nazis relocated jews, Ellen was a jew and her family had the help of AnnMarie to escape to Sweden, a safe place.
