Dorothy Day Research Paper

Dorothy Day was religious figure, an editor, a single mother, and women’s rights activist which was a lot for a woman in her time period. She was born in 1897, a time period where it was abnormal for woman to have such involvement with government issues. Women in the 20th century were usually staying at home and taking care of the kids and all household needs. In the time that Dorothy Day lived, she was considered a nut because of the decisions she made with her life. But today when her life is reviewed she is not a nut but instead a strong woman who loved to help others and after years of taking Christ for granted decided to seek Christianity.
Dorothy Day is not a nut because she had the ability to change her life around. Growing up as a young child Dorothy said her siblings didn’t search for God but took him from granted. They would pray before eating supper or if a natural disaster were to happen such as an earthquake. Even in college Day refused to be involved in anything that had to do with Christianity. I can see how others would think Dorothy was a nut. Everything she did with her life was outside the norms of society at the time. In a relationship with a child involved usually it’s the males that pull away. Dorothy found God and converted to Christianity despite her old views causing her relationship with Forster to end. What woman would willingly choose to become a single mom? She decided to take on all the responsibilities of being a single parent and still care for others. More often than not Dorothy spent little time caring for Tamar, her daughter, and more so looking out for the homeless. Her views of being a mother disturbed me because she saw it as suffering. “Being a mother is fulfillment, it is surrender to others, it is Love and therefore of course it is suffering” the words of Dorothy as she expressed her feelings.
