Life of Pi is an novel that is seeked after by many, due to its bold promise, “a story that will make you believe in God”. Many skeptical critics jump at such an unbelievable promise. Yann Martel writes a novel based on Piscine Molitor Patel- a young man surrounding himself with God and his journey to understanding the unexplainable. Martel beautifully uses his gallant statement coupled with the light subtleties within the novel to create a dynamic plot that is sure to please many-religious or not. Yet, the many subtleties within the novel reveal so much about the plot, from the title of the novel, the animals chosen and even the colours described all play a large roll. Orange signifies survival and is the colour of the second Hindu chakra. The colour represents God, some of the key tools Pi uses to survival are all orange- the whistle, life jacket, and life buoy. Pi’s faith in God helps him survive, his faith kept him alive. “As long as God is with me, I will not die. Amen.” (Martel 148) The tiger that Pi is trapped with, Richard Parker is an orange bengal tiger. Richard Parker instilled fear upon Pi and is the embodiment of God. When the last word of the novel slips into the reader 's mind, the reaction is different depending on the person. Some critics may be pieved that it did not make them believe in God because they were expecting an epiphany- that the story would be so amazing it left them speechless. Yet they did not read of a God grasping the hand of young Pi, telling him the way to go. When you sit back and notice all of the gritty details to the colour of the objects, to how Pi interacts with Richard Parker and even Pi’s name. They all perfectly show what God is to people.
