This film sends you on an emotional roller-coaster triggering many different emotions and feelings throughout. It keeps you hooked from the very start, wanting to follow the story of Ma and Jack and their escape. In some ways I think this film is an eye opener, showing what could possibly be happening around the world with kidnapping and rape and the long term effects it has on people. Ma struggles with adapting to the real world again after what happened to her and living 7 tough years in a small confined space. I believe it is understandable for her to feel this way as she went through something no woman should ever have to go through. But the way she begins to behave affects Jack and her family members such as her mother. This shows the bigger picture of how the horrific actions of others can have a huge impact on the victim’s life in many ways. “I'm sorry that I'm not nice anymore, but you know what? I felt a connection with the characters Ma and Jack and felt the emotions and thoughts they were going though. It gave me a better understanding of the characters and how they reflect victims around the world and in our society. Their plan to escape was very risky and the outcome could have been much worse. It made me realise that not all victims gets the opportunity to make a lucky escape from their captor and some people may never life their normal life again. Lenny Abrahamson showed Ma and Jack's escape portraying it how it was so he was able to show the long term effects afterwards. I would recommend this film to anyone, it was an intense, heartfelt film that captured the strong bond between mother and son. It shows with a bond as strong as this they were able to get through anything especially the hardest thing they had to face…the real world. “There are so many things out here. And sometimes it's scary. But that's ok. Because it's still just you and me...” This quote shows how much Ma means to Jack and how he was able to face such extreme difficulties but still was able to feel a sense of safety and comfort. Room transforms a shocking, non-fiction crime situation into an imaginary world, in which the imaginary world was the source of survival. Ma wanted to protect Jack and allow him to have a childhood as normal as possible in the 10x10 garden shed. She told him stories, created a
