Legal, Safety, and Regulatory Requirements The legal, safety, and regulatory impact the human resource department greatly by ensuring that all employees are treated equally and fairly. The rights of both employer and employee are covered by several different entities such as the National Labor Relations Board, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The U.S. Department of Labor’s mission statement is “Foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States and improve working conditions (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.)”. This organization covers a lot more than just these few issues, but is set in place for a thumb rule guideline for all employers to follow. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission “regulates employer conduct to ensure employees are not discriminated against (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2010, p. 441)”. The EEOC has been set in place to protect employees against discrimination based on race, gender, marital status, and many other issues such as these. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was signed by President Bush and prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment. Lastly the Department of Homeland Security is needed to basically keep the home land (U.S.) safe. It is there to protect businesses and organizations against terrorists or acts of terrorism.
