One day Jesus was sitting on a mountain and began engaging his disciples with a series of stories that showed them the kind of people who would enter into the kingdom of heaven. It was the largest denomination for the weight of silver or gold. The servants were given great responsibility, but the man was certain that they were capable of investing the talents and showing profit upon his return. When he returned, he was able to say, “well done” to all but one of the servants. The servant who received that smallest amount hid his talent in the ground and was unable to show any profit. The only thing he could give the master was a blatant, disingenuous excuse. He was pathetically lazy and disinterested in doing well for his master. The consequence for disobeying the master’s command was severe punishment. The man ordered the unprofitable servant to be thrown into outer darkness where there will be weeping a gnashing of teeth.
