Dreams are a powerful force that push us to accomplish amazing things even in the face of doubt and discouragement. They give us hope and push us to try to overcome obstacles even if we know the outcome is impossible to obtain. Even though we don’t always accomplish what we were hoping for at least you know that you tried and they may lead to other things that we can gain. We were made for greater things in life and dreams help us picture how we want to change the world. There are many examples of this idea in both War Dance and Of Mice and Men For example, In the documentary War Dance, three children who live in a refugee camp are interviewed. The children live in the refugee camp because they are victims of a violent rebel army in Uganda and their tribe was forced to abruptly flee their homes to escape the brutality of the rebel army. Despite the meager conditions they live in, the children’s school train to compete in the national music competition. Within the competition, there are a variety of competing categories which include dancing, singing, and the playing of instruments. One child who was interviewed, named Dominic, has a dream to be the best xylophone player in Uganda.

The children train day after day to win the competition. Having the opportunity to compete in this competition could very well be the best thing that has happened to them in their entire lives. However, the competition is incredibly stiff and it is highly doubtful the children from the refugee camp will win any awards. But in the end the children end up winning one section of the competition and Dominic receives an award for best xylophone player in Uganda. Even though it seemed impossible given his conditions that he grew up in he faced the challenge and achieved his dream. The children’s dreams gave them hope amidst all of the violence and destruction which led to a future in music and education.
Of Mice and Men is a story about two poor farm hands named George and Lennie who lived during The Great Depression and traveled together with a dream of one day getting their own farm and living on it together. There were many obstacles that got in the way of their dream but they still worked hard to get enough money to achieve their dreams. One of the obstacles was that Lennie was a gentle giant with a kind heart but he has some mental disabilities and his obsession with touching soft things got him in trouble. George has to take care of Lennie in their travels and help him stay out of trouble. At the last farm they worked at Lennie wanted to touch a girl’s dress and she screamed so he held tight onto her dress. George and Lennie had to leave because a mob formed to lynch Lennie because the girl claimed she was raped. They flee the farm and go find other jobs at another farm and plan to work until they have enough money to buy their own farm. Not long after, they meet another man named Candy on the farm who has a lot of money that they could use to buy their farm so they make a deal in exchange they agree to let him live on the farm with them.
