John Proctor Hero

In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, John Proctor makes it his priority to bring justice to the Puritan town of Salem. He faces a series of events in which he attempts to bring justice to help protect the people who are accused of the false witchcraft accusations. As the story continues the audience is faced between two opinions on whether John Proctor is to be considered a tragic hero or is he just a failure? Many ideas have been brought up on how one can be considered a tragic hero, one of many are Aristotle. Although, Aristotle states that one must meet certain qualifications, Proctor is best defined as a tragic hero because of his attempts to be the "hero" of Salem and to bring justice to the town, and in the end he faces the deadly truth …show more content…
One of the first qualifications listed is that one must be born into nobility or they are considered to be a very important figure in their society. Although John Proctor was not born into nobility, he is an important figure in his society. He is known by everyone and he is a well respected man in Salem. He considered himself a good puritan man and he had everything a man could want almost as if he were a king. Even though John Proctor was not born into nobility, he still qualifies because he plays an important role in the puritan society. In Miller’s text when John Proctor is introduced into the play describes how important he was in Salem, “He was the kind of man - powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led," and he was "...respected and even feared in Salem..." (Miller, 20-21). Also since Salem was set in Massachusetts of 1692, there weren’t any sorts of nobility in the town. The Church was considered to be the “government” of the town, but John Proctor had several issue when it came to the c hurch and it was solely towards Reverend Parris.
