James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career lasted only four years, he is regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in American history. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame regards him as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock.
He was born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in 1961, he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. He then moved to Clarksville, Tennessee and began playing gigs on the chitlin’ circuit, earning a place in the band the Isley Brothers, and eventually with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work with until 1965. The following band was Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in 1966 after being discovered by a woman named Linda Keith, who got Chas Chandler, the former bassist of the band the Animals, to be his first manager. In just a couple of months, Hendrix had become popular. He even earned three top ten songs on U.K. top ten with “Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe”, and “The Wind Cries Mary” with his new band the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He gained fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He was the world's highest paid performer before his accidental barbiturate overdose on September, 18, 1970.He earned several music awards in his lifetime. In 1967 he was voted Pop Musician of the Year, and the following year he was declared Performer of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Rolling Stone also said that he paved the way of using an instrument as an electric sound source. Rolling Stone added three of his albums to the list of 100 Best Albums of All Time. Those albums where “Are You Experienced”, “Electric Ladyland”, and “Axis: Bold as Love”. They also voted him greatest guitarist and also voted him the sixth greatest guitarist of all time. Hendrix was a primarily African-American descendant, but had Irish and Cherokee descendants as well. His father’s name was James Allen Ross Hendrix, but people called him Al. In 1941, Al met a woman named Lucille Jeter at a dance in Seattle. They got married the following year. Al was drafted into the U.S. Army to fight in World War II three days after the marriage. Johnny Allen Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington. He was the first child of five. Al wanted to come home and see his child whom he had received a telegram about while in the service. Al was denied the standard military furlough afforded servicemen for childbirth; his commanding officer placed him in the stockade to prevent him from going AWOL to see his infant son in Seattle. During a performance, Linda Keith, the girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist, noticed Hendrix. His playing mesmerised her. She invited him to join her for a drink; he accepted and the two became friends. She referred him to Chas Chandler, the former guitarist of the Animals. He became his new manager. He began finding and recruiting members for a band. Hendrix met Noel Redding. He told him that he liked Reddings hair and that he wanted to work with him. He let Mitch Mitchell also join the band. After the moderate UK chart success of their first two singles, "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze", the Experience began assembling material for a full-length LP. It was called “Are you Experienced”.
