One of the defining events in Kennedy's presidency, and in the world's history, was the Cuban Missile Crisis. On October 16, 1962, President Kennedy was alerted about a "Soviet SS-4 medium-range ballistic missile being assembled for installation" (History.com Staff). The president met with his executive committee, made up of "advisors and officials." The crew of JFK was worried about how close in proximity those missiles were to Florida. Those missiles had the capability to strike anywhere in the eastern United States. JFK talked through the situation with his committee, and they determined that the "presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba was unacceptable." Thankfully, JFK chose to go with a less violent approach. He decided to send Navy ships to "establish a blockade" on the island of Cuba to make sure that the Soviets wouldn't deliver any more weapons. JFK then decided that he would demand that the missiles be removed from Cuba. The leader of Russia, at the time, was Nikita Khruschev. Khruschev proposed to JFK that the Soviet Union would remove the missiles from Cuba, only if the United States would promise not to invade Cuba. Another proposal from Nikita Khruschev was that they would dismantle the missiles in Cuba if the USA would remove their missiles from Turkey. The administration of Kennedy was sure of accepting the first proposal, then with some further thinking, they accepted the other proposal. Kennedy stopped a potential war right then by remaining calm, thinking through the situation, and choosing resolutions that would have a great outcome for both sides. (History.com Staff). A huge part of JFK's presidency was the beginning of the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps is an organization where American people volunteer to go to other countries to help the less fortunate. At the University of Michigan, on October 14, 1960, President Kennedy gave a speech to thousands of students. He asked them, "How many of you, who are going to be doctors, are you willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your days traveling around the world?" Students responded to the President and made a petition and had 1000 signatures asking to join what would soon be know as the Peace Corps.
