I can relate to Jeffrey Gallet’s story and am not surprised by the lack in resources, time school staff utilized to actually work with him on a particular concept(s) that he struggled with, and the verbal abuse that he received, due to the learning disability(ies) that he possessed. I was inspired by his story. It moved me so much so that I desire to share my grade school story with the class. I did not have a learning disability that I knew of, but I did have a lot going on outside of the four walls of the classrooms that I sat in. This made it difficult for me to stay focused on the concepts being taught within my classes. I struggled with Math and did not intend to go to college.
It was not until after my high school graduation that I decided to check out what college looked like for my potential. I was notified by mail of potential academic and athletic scholarships that were available, if I decided to take up the opportunity of attending college. All of the colleges where located outside of Texas. That was a plus for me! I ended up going to college, because someone recognized one of the few talents that I possessed and allowed me to share it. You must recognize, monitor, and utilize students’ performance evaluations to identify their strengths and weakness and find a way to work together to improve areas in which students are not doing well in. If you need help with working with your students, you need to ask. Come up with tactics to not only address academic performance, but also address students’ emotional needs.
