The first reason why this generation is informed is because Millennials are granted with access to news that is given out through the television. To illustrate, “People actively navigate and make choices about which sources in their social media feeds they consider to be reliable, and they take other steps of participating in the news as well, including posting news stories, commenting on them, liking or favoriting them, and forwarding them to others.” (Media Insight Project) This means that Millennials are constantly are allocating news with others that is important and are actually paying attention to what is going on. Another example is, “People have always “discovered” news events, partly by accident, by word-of-mouth, or by bumping into it while watching TV news or listening to the radio, and then turning to other sources to learn more. Technology, and the facility with which Millennials use it, has made this mix of random and intentional learning far greater.” (Media Insight Project) This quote explains the many ways that Millennials are getting information from either apps or just daily gossip. So now let's talk about social media, at least any Millennial can relate. Social media has given us the opportunity to explore the world through socializing with others and following pages that allows us to see what's going on in the news. For example, a Millennial says “Social media keeps me more informed than I could be with the other forms of news,” said Elese, a 25-year-old in Chicago. “By quickly scrolling through my feed, I can see the major stories going on. If I need to read deeper into it, I can go to a credible source’s website.” (Media Insight Project). In this case Millennials get the opportunity to get the news to them and look deeper into it if they wanted to. In the AVID weekly article it states that “an example of this is the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, which owes a lot of it’s success to social media. The 2014 events in Ferguson, Mo., caught the attention of millions, even as law enforcement worked to keep journalist at bay - people could get a glimpse of what is going on through social media.” (Palder and Sameeha) This shows that the more people become mindful of major news events, they also have the capability to learn more about it. Others may feel that we only filter on what we want to hear and that is how we don’t get the information as much as we need
