The title, “The Dumbest Generation”, has recently been given to the group of people under thirty, otherwise known as the Millennials. People like Mark Bauerlein seem to think that yes, the Millennials are indeed the dumbest generation. He states that those under thirties general knowledge and reading habits have deteriorated over the years. Nevertheless, he doesn’t show how he has measured these claims. So, in the end, the question remains, are these youth as dumb as they are claimed to be? Overall IQ scores have risen since the 1930s, which indicates that intelligence is also rising. This shows that the Millennials are not, in fact, dumb but that they are trading knowledge for thinking skills (Source 2). Although the Millennials are labeled as the dumbest generation, they are breaking new barriers to redefine themselves.
Today’s youth are advancing their literacy as they are advancing their technology. Although some people feel the internet is to blame for the Millennials’ dumbness. Andrea Lunsford, a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, would beg to differ. In her article, “The New Literacy”, she reports that her students’ literacy skills have been improving for as long as she has been teaching. Meaning the youth of this generation think in a way that changes as the world around us changes rather than memorizing what has happened in the past. Some people believe that the modern way of learning doesn’t compare to the way past generations have been measured. Although the new way of learning has changed, the way of judging one’s intelligence must be refined too. Though the Millennials have been labeled the dumbest generation, they are proving themselves using the information the internet provides for
