1. In the first class of the semester, we went over The Handout, which was based upon 11 questions about philosophical questions that can go either way. This class activity made us think in a philosophical way and open up our minds to become more open minded in general. The next ticket we read were from the intro packet, which consists of three documents: the Calf-Path poem, the Quotations handout, and the Milgram handout. The Calf-Path poem focuses on the fact that people do something because that is always how it has been done, e.g. with traditions: people do it because “that is the way it is” instead of asking questions about why people do as they do. 1) The Values ticket focuses on two aspects: to set aside our personal values and to question our values. The first aspect is to use factual judgment instead of value judgment. By using factual judgment, one uses facts to explain values, which can make one question one’s values and why one has those values. Another aspect of the factual judgment is the fact that the world would not be a less motivated world because people would be motivated by facts and not values, which would give the same result. The second aspect was having a “watcher”, trying to understand one’s own values by adding a non judging awareness of exactly what I am doing and why I am doing it, which then makes one understand what one’s values are and how those values affect others as well as oneself. The point is for the watcher to watch over oneself so one can watch one’s own values without identifying with them to become less judgmental and focused on one’s own values. The Meaning ticket focuses on solving the problem of life and not answering what the meaning of life is. Everyone is struggling with what they are and what they wish to be. One can either accept who one already is or try to change to whatever that person wants to be. Furthermore, the ticket focuses on how to achieve success, which is through pleasing others. However, ultimately the most successful people are the people who connect to a process and not the end result.
