After some reflection on interpersonal skills I have come up with the following...
The skills (I) have ... Throughout my adult life I have held jobs in both teaching and in the food handling industry, which helped me to develop the skills in Tact, Listening, Feedback, Counseling, and Anger Management. Tact - Tact is defined by "a keen sense of what to say or do to avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations." (Tact, n.d). An example of tact being used would be in a parent/teacher conference situation. Many times conferences coincide with report card time, so that there is a proper time and place for both the parent and the teacher to discuss progress and if needed interventions or extra help. A

Counsel is regarded as, " advice; opinion or instruction given in directing the judgment or conduct of another." ( Counseling, n.d.). Counseling is taking your listening skills a step further. I have been able to be assertive when I have needed to be, but it is an interpersonal skill I would like to become better at. It is not a skill I am automatically comfortable with and a level of assertiveness is needed, in business and in life in general. An example of a situation needing assertiveness would be one where an employee is showing up late to work every day. The employee shows not taking into consideration that their tardiness sets off everyone else who have to pick up extra jobs to cover for them. Assertiveness would be needed to approach that employee and address their behavior without backing down, but in a fair way. Obviously, a manager or business owner needs to also employ listening skills, and tact at the proper time, but sometimes the situation needs to just be dealt with in a little more direct manner. The rules need to be followed for the system to run a certain

On the surface I think I am like most students: I take university seriously, I have my own visions for the future that I am determined to make happen, and I do not expect anyone to lead my way. What makes me different from the rest of the crowd though is how I love to take part organizing something for the greater good. During my school years, I have joined several school organizations which has taught me how to work well in team and how to work under pressure. Previous experience has also given me a considerable amount of confidence in my interpersonal communication skills. I look forward to putting this skills and experiences in this Peace tour as a leader.…

Stick to what you personally observed and don't try to speak for others. Explain the consequences of the other person's behaviour and how you feel about it. Then give examples of how you and others are affected. Describing reactions or consequences allows the other person to see and understand the impact their actions are having on others, the team and the organization. Whenever possible make your suggestions helpful by including practical, feasible examples.…

Realizing that these scores are only one point away from one another and reading the explanation below them, I came to the conclusion that most of the time my communication style is Assertive, but there is also a good chance that my style would also fit into the aggressive category depending on the situation. Upon interviewing my friends and my current boss they agreed upon the term decisively cautious as how they would describe my communication style. In particular, my boss stated that I approach each situation differently and depending how what the goal of the communication is I act…

I have learned to be very conscious of things that I say and how I say it. A skill that comes to mind, is “calling someone in”. The environment where I grew up, taught me to call people out. Unfortunately, this only created conflict and hostility. I have learned that calling someone out does not solve the issue, because the issue is not able to be fully addressed.…

Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

Assertiveness, according to Das and Shah, is known as someone who can state their opinions with confidence in a way that does not offend others (2013). A person who is known to be assertive is direct and enforces their right to speak up, but they are often careful not to over step or impede on other people ’s right to express their ideas. This would be the ideal case for someone who has a moderate level of assertiveness. Peneva and Marvodiev label it as a type of “social competence” (2013).…

Few people would be surprised to find that it is simple to search the definition of counseling on any active web browser. As expressed on Google, counseling is defined as “The provision of assistance and guidance in resolving personal, social, or psychological problems.” When I read this definition, it does not bring personal meaning to the word as I view it. I define counseling as various aspects of working with people, helping those cope and understand with what life continuously presents, and by the individuals that I have seen benefit from this practice. Counseling does not only impact the recipient of the process, but the advisor as well.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…
