This is far from the truth. Making English the national language means that the government at all levels must only use the English language. This means all records, regulations, legislation, public documents, all hearings, official ceremonies and public meetings will be held in English. But, having English as the official language will have some exceptions. Those exceptions would be for safety services, public health,and judicial proceedings. Having English as the official language does not get rid of the right or prevent immigrants from preserving their cultural heritage and language in their personal lives. In 1811 the first state to have English become their official was Louisiana. Following their suit was Illinios who made English the official language in 1969. After Illinois Massachusetts made it the official language in 1975. In 1978 Hawaii also made English the official language. In 1984 Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee added the law. In 1986 California add the law. In 1987 many decided to have the law. Those were Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, and South Carolina. In 1988 Colorado and Florida added the law. Alabama added the law in 1990. In 1995 New Hampshire and South Dakota added the law. In 1996 Georgia, Virginia, and Wyoming added the law. In 1998 Alaska added the law. Utah added English as the official in 2000. In 2002 Iowa added the law. In 2006 Arizona had English become the first language. In 2007 both Idaho and Kansas added the law.
