The advent of improved technology has almost always been met with strong resistance. Claims of the destruction of society, community and family values are synonymous with each leap forward of human ingenuity. As such, there is no surprise that the arrival and growth of social networking sites have been met with the same controversy, challenges and concern, namely: that the tool is “corrosive to ‘real’ community.” I strongly disagree with this statement. Not only is the definition of ‘real’ community rather subjective, it is moreover arguable that social networking sites are in fact increasing community and overall human interconnectivity, on a global scale. This increase can be observed through two facets, as discussed below: individual commonality of interests and the ability to remain informed about the world.

Participation in any community affords individuals an increased ability to interact with other groups of people with similar likes, dislikes and interests. This ability is significantly amplified through the use of social networking websites. No matter if you are searching for a former college roommate, your first grade teacher, or an international friend, no easier or faster way to make a connection exists than social media.
