Frostbite. The burning sensation in all your limbs. Your fingers about to fall off from the lack of quality clothes. No more food. No more blankets. Anybody and everybody are dropping like flies from illness and freezing body temperatures. And now, you wonder: Is all this trouble and devastation really worth the risk? The first two years of the American Revolution hadn’t gone well for the Continental Army. Not surprisingly, Washington was having trouble keeping all his soldiers in the army. For most people in the war, victory seemed far off, in fact for many, it seemed unlikely. If you were a soldier at Valley Forge, would you have abandoned the war too? I am not going to re-enlist in the Revolutionary War because of the illness and death toll, the lack of provisions and quality supplies, and the low levels of enthusiasm left in the soldiers for the war. During the winter stay at Valley Forge, many soldiers were reported sick or unable to report to duty. Once they took a glance at the state of General George Washington’s soldiers, they understood why Washington called them down to Valley Forge. According to Document B, the painting by William Henry Powell shows that General George Washington was trying his best to bring peace and understanding to the introduction of the 2 groups: The Committee of Congress and the Valley Forge soldiers. The painting shows very clearly the difference in the two groups’ attitudes and clothing personalities.
