Author Kim Wickstrom (Wickstrom) quoted, “We are finding more of a need. I’m finding we have a lot of grandparents raising grandchildren.” Over the past years (Megan L. Dolbin-MacNab), there has been a major rise in the number of grandparent-headed families. As a matter of fact, the census data indicate that in the United States, there are roughly 2.4 million grandparents raising 4.5 million children. As a result, the grandparents accept the responsibility for a grandchild since the grandchild’s parents cannot or select not to care for the child. Although grandparent-headed families are extremely diverse, they are more likely to be African-American and living in poverty. Then again, grandparents can be Caregiving figures, if they provide physical and emotional care for the child and are consistent figures in their grandchildren’s lives. As the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren rises, there are demands for some individuals’ needing additional health care services and some support services. In the same fashion, several grandparents may not have a problem adjusting to their fresh role, however, for several it may take minor adjusting. Not to mention, that some grandparents may experience an increase in their stress levels and may need assistance with coping with additional Caregiving tasks.
