Within the research on police and legitimacy procedural justice has been an important topic. This fairness of procedural justice that individuals experience by law enforcement, enhances their acceptance of policy decisions Wissler(199). This has been put to the test in multiple studies, including on domestic violence Paternoster et al(1997( which found domestic violence offenders who experience fair treatment by police had less rates of future domestic violence. The key features of procedural justice that transcend communities are participating, neutrality, and trust. First participation is important to allow the suspect to explain themselves to authority Adler, Hensler and Nelson(1983). Next is neutrality, enhancing police legitimacy is helpful when the police are seen as neutral Tyler(2004). The next element is respect, people like to be respected by law enforcement and act positive and when respected. Another important element is trust Tyler(1990) shows that the majority of people have trust that they will be treated fair in the future by courts and law enforcement which is important to procedural justice.
