"I don 't know who you are. I don 't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don 't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career.” (Morel, "Taken").
This famous quote from the movie Taken, provides us with the sense of what it takes to be a professional. It provides us with the beginning, an understanding, that we need a very particular set of skills. Its how those skills fit in, that provide the understanding of the definition of professionalism and what it takes to get there.
Understanding professionalism which can be described many different ways, as in the article “Developing this vital Characteristics” which states, “being professional might mean dressing smartly at work, or doing a good job. For others, being professional means having advanced degrees or other certifications, framed and hung on the office wall.” Whereas many professionals do show and have these qualities, there still needs to be a well-defined definition that encompasses the whole picture. Professionalism should be something that is second nature, it should be practiced at all times; giving 100 percent in your work, being a team player, showing leadership, being respectful, not only to your clients but to your co-workers as well.
