Do you remember being so young yet so bold that you would tell everyone around you the wonderful things you were going to accomplish once you were an adult? In my case, I would go around revealing that I was going to become the president of the united states or a teacher because my teacher, at the time, didn’t teach accordingly to what I wanted. Currently, as I am nearing the end of my high school career, I flash back to those fearless moments wondering where everyone, including myself, put those boundless goals and dreams. I now know that I need to take down those mental barriers and tell myself that I can not only achieve whatever I put my mind to, but also believe that I will be very passionate about it. Knowing that I can spark at least a bit of hope in a student’s life gives me desire to keep on striving into what I want to achieve. I love helping everyone around me with any way I can. I have gone through some troubled times, some like others but also some unique, that have allowed me to understand and help others in the best way possible. For example, my mother came from Mexico when she was 7 months pregnant with me. My biological father had abandoned her, so to provide a better life for her soon to be three children, she came here. As my siblings and I grew up, we went through several troubles due to only having my mother. Although my mother remarried when I was the age of five, it was very difficult because he did not provide the encouragement I needed for during my education to strive. Around the same time, my older sister got diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis which lasted for about four years. My family and I were in and out of hospitals and struggling to pay simple bills. My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Gene crossover, the exchange of genetic material between two homologous chromosomes, can be observed in many different instances with the help of model organisms. Many scientists observe gene crossover to better comprehend the heritability patterns of unrelated genes (Chen and Olive, 1965). In the case of this experiment, the use of Sodaria allowed students to observe the inheritance pattern of two different phenotypes when crossed in a a petri dish (Saleem, et al., 2001). Sordaria, a microfungi commonly found in feces of herbivores, was the subject of this study. Using Sodaria, students were able to observe random genetic crossing due to a mutation that the test subject underwent many years ago that only allows it to mate via sexual reproduction.…

I was always fond of the color orange. It is the fur color of the lovable, bouncy Tigger that enjoyed the company of his friends. There were times where his friends were annoyed by his overly energetic self, but I realized that his optimistic character has helped me to admire the color orange, even today. I also realized that the characters’ houses aligned with the characters themselves. Christopher Robin, the boy from Winnie the Pooh, lived in a tree at the top of the hill in the center of the forest, being the center of his imagination.…

Compared to my affluent friends in college, I was born and raised in a low-income community on the East Side of San Jose. Additionally, my family 's social-economical background placed us at a disadvantage due to the fact in which my parents were not able to afford to pay for certain academic luxuries that my peers have had (private tutors, extracurricular academic activities, summer science camps, etc). However, I was fortunate to have been placed in charter schools for the most part of my K-12 education.…

Throughout my high school career, I’ve put much thought into the question that authorities have asked my generation since kindergarten: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When we were six, they asked us this question. Our answers weren’t well developed, for we were young and unaware. We wanted to become astronauts, firefighters, Batman, or in my case, a professional tennis player. When we were ten, they asked us again, and our answers shifted to more realistic vocations, but ones that were still not clearly thought out.…

My senior year of high school was relaxing at first as I didn’t have any real plans for my future. I was completely clueless about what I wanted to do, academically and professionally, post high school graduation. When I looked at my past for help I saw a pre-teen adolescent, a girl with eyes too big for her face, belting vocals into the bathroom mirror for she thought she could perform in a band someday. As I looked further back, I saw a six-year-old child who dreamed of becoming a dancer— who twirled for her mother every chance she had. Yet, it was during my senior year in high school when certain, unfortunate, circumstances created a pathway to a future that I would have never otherwise pursued.…

My entire life I have always wanted to do something where I would be remembered positively by many people. I recall always telling myself I was going to become a backup dancer for a famous singer, become a singer myself, or maybe an actress. Better yet, I thought I could have been all three. As I entered middle school, I realized those goals were too surreal to even become the slightest bit possible, mainly since I am located in an area that most people haven’t even heard of. Back then, I was very uncertain about any career goals I have had.…
