The Pros And Cons Of Music Directing

Throughout my high school career, I’ve put much thought into the question that authorities have asked my generation since kindergarten: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When we were six, they asked us this question. Our answers weren’t well developed, for we were young and unaware. We wanted to become astronauts, firefighters, Batman, or in my case, a professional tennis player. When we were ten, they asked us again, and our answers shifted to more realistic vocations, but ones that were still not clearly thought out. We wanted to become rock stars, cowboys, police officers, or in my case, a Hollywood starlet. According to the United States Department of Labor, disadvantages to this career include a limitation on alone time. Performances and concerts usually occur on the weekend or during the evening, and a music director travels frequently in regards to performances and gatherings both within and outside of their own choral program. While this source mentions a few downsides to music directing, many positive factors are mentioned, as well. Most music directors have the ability to set their own hours, and positions are available nationwide. Employment is not limited to a strict region of the country. Finally, most music education majors end up directing in a religious and/or educational setting. Personal pros and cons of music directing have also come into play when considering my vocation. If I decide to open a music program for the homeless and disabled, I will more than likely need to acquire a large sum of funds, as well as government support. The location, as well as the amount of time required to build/remodel the area for this program also alter the final result. To reiterate, I plan to establish a school for the homeless and disabled. Many people may not understand every concept of music right away, and I am prepared for this. All musicians had to start somewhere, and I am willing to make compromises for others. American Sign Language can be used in my profession in terms of music therapy. If one of my students is a Deaf individual, I can utilize my knowledge of American Sign Language to improve my ability to portray visual learning, as well as revealing the concept that music impacts even those who cannot hear it.
